The Bird & Butterfly Garden is a work in progress that is designed to
teach all students about various bird species and migration patterns. A
separate unit of instruction will also encompass a study on butterflies
and the importance of planting specific shrubs, bushes and flowers to
attract beautiful birds and butterflies to our garden.
Students in ELL (English Language Learners) as well as in the mainstream
classes will have the opportunity to work together on this venture. By building
this partnership between children learning the English language and their native
English speaking classmates, a greater respect for diversity and cultural acceptance will
be achieved. In particular, will have our more advanced ELLs work as mentors with our lower
level ELLs to further improve language development and build student autonomy.

Thanks to Parents and Students in getting our garden started.
Wildlife Habitat
Bird feeders (both seed and hummingbird), bird houses, a bird bath, and plants were
placed to encourage birds to come into our area. Students will have the opportunity
to study bird migration patterns globally through Journey North, a website dedicated
to teaching children about wildlife migration and seasonal change. Through the use of
iPads and the computer, the students will be able to report their bird sightings on the
website to communicate with children from around the world as our project
continues. This will be documented on a student created and maintained blog to
show the progress of our school garden and student learning.
Additionally, students will have their achievements recognized by having the Bird & Butterfly
Garden certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Wildlife Habitat. The Bird &
Butterfly Garden will be a benefit to the entire school as classes will be able to use it when teaching lessons. Finally,
families will have access to the garden for their viewing and enjoyment as it will bring a symphony of sounds and
sights to our school.
